Women’s Waimea Championships

I was lucky enough to get a spot in the Women’s Waimea Championships.  I am not sure why as most of the names on the list are defiently a league above me when it comes to big wave riding.  You got to start somewhere though.  I hope this is the second wind of my surfing career, lighting a fire inside to work from the ground on up.  Unfortunately the event didn’t run this year due to the lack of swell which I am rather glad about as I don’t think I was ready  by any means.  Hopefully some training with Hanli (my freediving ocean loving friend) and Tash from Absolute Pilates will pay off.  Lets see where this adventure takes me….

Been a while!

Life is good when its good.  Besides the World Cup, 2010 was a bit of a mere.  Heres to 2011.  Let it be as fine as the winter of 2002 on the North Coast.  No ops, plenty of wave sliding, distinctions and friends!

My latest news:

I’m healing from a hip operation.

I surf everyday.

I’m a full time student at Varsity College doing enviro studies #tryingtosavetheworld

Tonight we set up the projector and gathered up some friends and staff of the Secret Spot to support Bafana Bafana against Colombia.  Wow!  The thought of our country coming together sent shivers down my spine.  I don’t know about you guys but I am FEELING IT!!!!!!!

So much pride and emotion!

MY OH MY!

I enjoyed a weekend of waves.  Waves in abundance and best of all variety.  On Saturday  it was barrels shared between Trav and I. We both may have ridden the best barrels of our lives thus far.  Then on Sunday a rippable A-frame secret peak.  Al Johns, Trav and I got wind of a France look alike beach break – minus the nudity!  It was so nice to have a windless weekend for a change.  Hello winter….

This snap shot doesn't give the wave justice.

FEEL IT … IT’S HERE!

Yesterday the East was eager and blew its guts out.  Angry Easterly.  Today I surfed a lumpy morning sickness bowl at Surfers Lane with my good friend Trav.  It is so liberating to be back in the water and enjoying my mornings.

Yesterday I walked the streets of Tongaat to find myself a deal on a Bafana Bafana 2010 World Cup jersey.  I bargained my way down to a good price. Its kind of the equivalent of hustling prices in Bali.  So, today I wear my Jersey with pride in support of my country.  FEEL IT … IT’S HERE!

Trav and the lumpy ocean!

Nokkie and I showing our support!

Slummies (East London)

Spent 4 days in East London.  Not really EAST of London but it might as well be.  Its a different place.  The best things its got going for it is: Nikita Robb(and family), Rosy Hodge, The McGregors, Friesland Milkshakes and the fact that its a short enjoyable drive to Port Alfred.  After sitting on the pier at PA watching the young talent in South Africa ride some of the longest waves I’v seen in a while (remember that I’m from ballito a.k.a closeout heaven) in the Oakley Pro Junior I have realized that I want to do surf trips to that area more often.  Its got the best of both worlds.  A long peeling right hander and a puntable left.  Thats if I could punt but maybe this wave will magically teach me how to boost on my back hand.  You never know.  What a fun trip I had with Stace and Nikita and I also got to spend a couple hours with Rosy.  A core group of friends.  Nothing better.  I danced most of the weekend away as I can’t surf due to a hip injury.  I can’t really dance either but I tried.

Moses Mabhida

Yesterday I was cool.  I ate lunch on Florida Road at Spigadora which seems like one of the top ten things to do if you aiming at being a Durban celebrity. Not that being a local celeb is my aim.  Also paid a visit to the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Moses Mabhida was a former General Secretary of the South African Communist Party.  I’m not that passionate about the city of Durban but the new stadium gives me reason to smile as I approach it.  Its spectacular.  The high-tech cable car  kindly elevates you to the top!  I heard it has broken down a couple times and people had to trup down the big arch!  On top of the grand arch you get a 360 degree view of city and sea!  It makes even the grungiest of cities look beautiful.  The big arch symblolizes a diverse nation unified in the love of sport.  The 2 legs of the arch on the southern side of the stadium join together on the northern side, representing a once-divided people now united.  I need to surf!

Mad Wax needed!

Anyone ever seen the movie Mad Wax?  I haven’t seen the whole thing besides a short clip that is available on Youtube that a friend sent me to cheer up about the fact that i was missing out on swell at Margret River and stuck at home with studies and NE weak surf.  Its a movie that Ross Clarke-Jones stars as a young grom who makes money as a lowly window washer. He finds a book on how to make your own surfboard wax that magically transports you to whatever surf spot you want!  Sounds like a fun story.  Click this for the Youtube link.

Instead of rubbing magic wax on my surfboard and getting teleported to perfect waves this weekend I:

-Went to a 21st

-Spent hours sliding across oddly shaped masses of water

-Frolicked in urine and chlorine at the local swimming pool with the rest of social Ballito

-Watched Alice in Wonderland in 3D

-Thought of 6 impossible things before breakfast!

North Coast Loner!

I have nothing much to write besides the fact that yesterday I surfed bottomless barrels, drank bottomless coffee, and felt as if I was writing a bottomless assignment.  Back to bottomless assignment.
